Valley Gardens (Phases 1 and 2) | Brighton
LOCATION: Central Brighton
SIZE OF PROJECT: 1.5km (3 parks)
BUILD TIME: 12 months
Cultura’s brief was to transform and improve the public green space to create a vibrant urban linked park system at the heart of the city. The soft landscape design was for a high quality, functional and bio diverse natural environment.
The scheme included 12,000 square metres of high performance lawns; 1,250 square metres of wildflower turf mats; 150 new trees – cherries, elms and maples; 30,000 perennials and more than 313,000 bulbs.
Works saw the stripping out of the original green spaces over the three existing parks together with the re-landscaping of these plus the additional newly created green spaces.
Providing their expertise and working in collaboration was the over-riding theme for this project for Cultura. From recommending that the heavy water logged soil was deep ripped, rather than verti-drained, working together with soil scientists to achieve the perfect blend of nutrients and PH levels, and collaborating with client Brighton & Hove City Council and the main contractor to ensure the dovetailing of the landscaping and major road infrastructure works ran smoothy.
